The Black Swan Green Cruelty Among Jason - 1070 Words

Black Swan Green: Cruelty Among Jason In David Mitchell’s Black Swan Green, Jason Taylor is a teenager who goes through different obstacles that he wishes he could change in his life. He deals with bullying, his case of stammering, and trying to find somewhere to belong at school and as well as outside of school. Jason deals with a speech impediment called stammering. Stammering is a speech disorder that involves repetitions of certain sounds. By having this speech impediment he gets bullied from other teenagers and as well as his own family. Jason is in Miss. Throckmortons class playing Hangman. On the board are the letters NIGH-ING--E. â€Å"The word ‘nightingale’ kaboomed in my skull but it just wouldn’t come out† (Mitchell,26). At this moment Jason is quite scared, ashamed, and breathless and his response was, â€Å"I’m not sure miss.†(Mitchell,26). Jason now thinks that his stuttering would â€Å"sprea[d] round the school like a poison-gas attack† and â€Å"life won’t be worth living† (Mitchell,26). Eventually it does and everyone knows about it. Ross Wilcox is the first one to make fun of him saying,†G-g-go on, l-l-l-lend us yer p-p-protractor, T-T-Taylor, honest I want to do m-my M-M-M-Maths homework†(Mitchell,21 9). Ross keeps nagging Jason so he can do his â€Å"mat[h] homework†, but as we can see he’s just cruel and a jerk towards Jason. Jason s family are cruel to him too, some not trying to anyway. â€Å"Honestly, Helena, when are you going to get rid of his stutter? It’s social

VII Strum Und Drang by Lamb of God free essay sample

Lamb of God is a groove metal or metalcore band that has been around since the late 1990s with Burn The Priest as their debut and their original band name. They changed it to Lamb of God later due to religious contoversy and have also released albums like Ashes Against the Wake, New American Gospel and Sacrament which are some fan favorites. Randy Blythe then got arrested and actually was able to teach his cellmate English I think(dont quote me on that). Before the release of their seventh album, they decided to release five tracks from the album which leaves us with half of it left we havent listened to prior to its release. How does this album hold up? Youre about to find out. As stated before, these guys have a metalcore sound at times and this album is no exception as far as Im concerned. We will write a custom essay sample on VII: Strum Und Drang by Lamb of God or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In the tracks Erase This and 512 it seems to hold on to more of a melodic tone than youre probably used to by now, even though Ive only known Laid To Rest prior to this album, even I can see a large difference. This album also features a couple of guest stars as well like Deftones Chino Moreno who provides most of the melodic or clean vocals and in the track Torches we get Greg Puciato from The Dillinger Escape Plan. In the song Overlord, we also get a very Alice In Chains-esque song as some people pointed out with it mostly being mostly soft and fairly dark and eerie in tone. It does decide to pick up the pace eventually but not for long as it reverts back to the eerie melody you heard before. It may not be the best on the album but it sure is a good one and also spans for more than 6 minutes in length which in Lamb of God terms is pretty long. Aside from that however, this album never wants let its foot off the excelerator and with good reason! It honestly feels more thrash inspir ed this time around than groove inspired actually. You may find that hard to believe but trust me, I hear some thrash inspired riffs like the melodic riffs in Erase This or 512 which were previously mentioned. Some of the riffs have gotten heavier and some more aggresive or more melodic because of that slight twinge that I personally notice. It just adds little something special in my eyes that will probably keep me coming back to it whenever I can. I like this album and it is easy to see why this is one of the most highly rated albums of this year. I give this album a 9.5/10. I am the Grim Reaper, signing off.

History of Women on the Supreme Court

History of Women on the Supreme Court Established by Article III of the U.S. Constitution, the Supreme Court of the United States first met on February 2, 1790 and heard its first case in 1792. It would take nearly two centuries another 189 years - - before this august yet single-sex body would more accurately reflect the composition of the nation it presided over with the advent of the courts first female associate justice. In its 220-year history, only four women justices have served on the Supreme Court: Sandra Day OConnor (1981-2005); Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1993-present); Sonia Sotomayor (2009-present) and former U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan (2010-present). The latter two, nominated by President Barack Obama, each earned a distinct footnote in history. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 6, 2009, Sotomayor became the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court. When Kagan was confirmed on August 5, 2010, she changed the gender composition of the court as the third woman to serve simultaneously. As of October 2010, the Supreme Court became one-third female for the first time in its history. The Supreme Courts first two women hailed from significantly different ideological backgrounds. The courts first female justice, Sandra Day OConnor, was nominated by a Republican president in 1981 and was regarded as a conservative pick. The second female justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was the choice of a Democratic president in 1993 and widely viewed as liberal. The two women served together until OConnors retirement in 2005. Ginsburg remained as the lone female justice on the Supreme Court until Sonia Sotomayor took the bench in the fall of 2009. Ginsburgs future as a justice remains uncertain; a February 2009 diagnosis of pancreatic cancer suggests she may need to step down if her health worsens. But she had the backing of Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist (whom shed dated while both were at Stanford Law School) and the endorsement of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater. Smith liked her as well. As biographer Cannon notes, Mr. Reagan never interviewed anyone else. Born March 26, 1930 in El Paso, Texas, OConnor grew up on an isolated ranch in southeastern Arizona without electricity or running water, where cowboys taught her how to rope, ride, shoot, repair fences and drive a pickup. With no school nearby, OConnor went to live with her maternal grandmother in El Paso to attend a private academy for girls, graduating at age 16. OConner credits her grandmothers influence as a factor in her own success. An economics major at Stanford Univerity, she graduated magna cum laude in 1950. Legal Wrangling Led to Law School No Room in the Old Boys Club When the Army drafter her husband she followed him to Frankfurt where she was a civilian lawyer in the Quartermaster Corps. Afterward, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1957, where OConnor again received little interest from established law firms, so she started to start her own with a partner. She also became a mother, giving birth to three sons in six years and only stepping away from her practice after her second son was born. From Mother to Majority Leader Subsequently appointed state senator to fill a vacant seat, she was elected for two more terms and became majority leader - the first woman to do so in any state legislature in the U.S. She moved from the legislative branch to the judicial when she was elected to serve as judge on the Maricopa County Superior Court in 1974. In 1979 she was nominated to the Arizona Court of Appeals and in 1981 to the Supreme Court. Not A Wasted Nomination Her ascension to the highest court in the land also had one small side benefit to women - Mr. Justice, the form of address previously used in the Supreme Court, was amended to the more gender-inclusive single word Justice. Health Concerns Her bout with cancer was an experience she did not publicly discuss for a number of years. Finally, a speech in 1994 revealed her frustration with the attention the diagnosis brought, the ongoing scrutiny of her health and appearance, and the media speculation over the possibility of retirement. Understanding project management techniques Coursework

Understanding project management techniques - Coursework Example Understanding project management techniques However, the few who work from home need to make available their systems at local centers for upgradation and another 10 percent of the systems with JAWS screen reader software need special skills to upgrade to Windows 7. Every project poses problems to project managers and a structured method to problem-solving is required to expose and handle the problem as well as expose other unknown problems that expose the project to risks (Walker, 2011). This project can be effectively managed through use of the most relevant project management tools and techniques. Planning, designing, implementing, monitoring, and completion are the different stages through which the project needs to be taken through successfully to upgrade all the 400 systems of the company. The tools that are available and which can be used for the project will be identified; evaluated and relevant tools and techniques will be used to understand the same. Tools like: Gantt chart, logic network, PERT chart, product breakdow n structure and work breakdown structure are some of the tools that will be evaluated for use in this project. Further, risk management in the project will also be discussed for implementation. A Gantt chart is a frequently used project management tool that provides a graphical representation of a planning and coordinating schedule and also helps track specific tasks of a project. It is a horizontal bar chart serving as a project control tool. The horizontal axis of the chart represents the total time span of the project while the vertical axis represents the various activities or tasks. The horizontal bars can represent the sequences, time and the timing of the tasks. Gantt charts give the status of a project at any given time, but do not represent the interdependcies in the project which is a major drawback when it is important (Whatis.com, 2000). Sub-tasks of a particular task can be viewed using a Gantt chart as small manageable sub-tasks with their dependencies as arrows are illustrated along with other parallel processes, timeline of the project and the progress is tracked with the chart. With tools like OpenOffice, the progress of a task can be tracked in terms of pe rcentage with the dependencies of the sub-tasks also being documented; a Gantt chart automatically gives the start date of the task based on the dependencies (Louarne, 2003). A Gantt chart is also called a Bar chart where the bars represent the tasks and its length represents the time to complete the task (Bureau of Energy Efficiency, 2011). A Gantt chart is created by determining the necessary activities (roles), listing the man-hours required, responsibilities and the throughput time. a disadvantage with Gantt charts is that project that are too complex cannot communicate effectively through this chart as the interdependencies cannot be well developed using such a chart (Russell, 2010). All the tasks, sub-tasks, resources, schedules, etc. will be needed to be sorted out and represented using a Gantt chart for easy tracking of its progress. b) Logic Network As Gantt charts lack the convenience of representing interdependencies between events and activities within a project to give updated information on the project operations at any given time, networks of logic are constructed for this purpose. Valuable information for project planning, creating master plans by integrating plans, scheduling, resource management and timeline is made
